When I was playing the Trogs this weekend I was thinking about my crappy performance in the playoffs. Gary was saying he was in a losing skid himself.   So I thought I would check it out.  The Trogs actually do have the most losses, with the Rottweilers coming in second 65-57.  However the Trogs also have 32 more wins.  In spite of the recent bad luck overall the Trogs still have a great playoff record.   I totaled up the wins and loses for all the play off series we have on the web site prior to the current year.    Although I am near the bottom as expected, the Shamrogs and the new Wobs  actually have had worse luck than myself.     I believe I also hold the honor of having the most playoff wins (42) without a title.   In addition I am way in front in terms of the number of games below .500 with 15 more loses than wins.  No one is close to me on that.  However I really don’t think I have learned anything about how to actually win in the playoffs.   Any suggestions?

Here is the stats used to calculate the overall ratings.  The SOM value is based on the Defense (14%), Hitting (50%), and Pitching (36%).      As you can see from that point of view the Rottweilers would be in 2nd place. However I then added in value based on the draft.   This is again a little arbitrary but I decided to use 16 RAR for each pick in the top 3 rounds so the average team should get 48 RAR.  Some in the first round will be much higher but I cannot predict who will take a zero RAR no-card player, or a role player to fill a particular need but by themselves isn’t a complete player.  So the Wobs rocket up to 2nd place passing the Rottweilers and Crawdads.  If it weren’t for the Guerillas I would have the weakest draft.  Unfortunately for the rest of the league the best team  – the Vols – also has a great draft position.   The Skunks actually have the 2nd strongest draft with the Dawgz in 3rd.     Obviously this could all go out the window after the Jan 1st trades are made but at this point the two best teams each have 7 games against me so assuming I go 4-10 I basically will start out the season 6 games under .500

The offense ratings are based on the top 220 players who have an RAR 10 or above.  I picked ten because I saw at 9 Madison Bumgarner came in and there is no way a pitcher will hit that well in SOM, at least based on my 20+ years.   In the case of offense the Crawdads have the fewest PAs but their quality is tip top.

For pitching I took all the players with an RAR of 10 or more.  This was 188 pitchers and should be the core of every team.  I know some managers can do very well with short inning pitchers and one way pitchers and some of them probably wouldn’t make the list but still the statistically best 188 pitchers I believe is a good number to conduct the evaluation.

In addition to having the best fielding team the Vols also have the best pitching. They have by far the largest number of innings from quality pitchers.  Their biggest lead is in the number of games started,  I don’t know how many of them also have RP but it looks like he could trade a bunch and still remain on top.   Combined with the great defense all the rolls will have to be on the hitters cards to beat them.    The Midnight Venom are a not too distant second.  There is a little drop off for the Wobs in 3rd then a group in the middle with the Sharkbites bringing up the rear.   Since the S-Bites have a decent defense there will be a partial offset there.

The Vols staff is very deep and fairly young to boot.   One thing that stands out is that only one pitcher, Paxton would be below .500 winning percentage and he is right on the border.  In addition to the great starters that Andrew Miller had one of the best RP performance last year and with 74 IP!  Danny Duffy would probably quality as the best RP but I don’t know how John intends to use  him.

The Midnight Venom put together an outstanding rotation and also have a top RP in Britton.   The addition of The Deadman probably bumped Holland to the minors and he is their low man on the totem pole.  The only potential chink in the armor is that their defense was rated in the middle of the pack.  But with these pitchers maybe that is all he needs.

The Wobs have the best balance of the top 3 with 5 great starters and 3 very good arms in the pen.  Even the pen has balance with 2 righties and a lefty.   By the statistics I am using Verlander had the best year of any pitcher in 2016.

The Cent Sprockets come in fourth with a top #1 in Scherzer.  Fulmer had a great year but is a little low on innings.  He has some solid RP but then his apparent #5 starter is also low on innings.   Looks like he could get off to a great start and hope to build a big enough lead to justify making a few trades before his innings run low.

The Trogs have the deepest staff behind the Vols in terms of both games started and total innings and I know some managers value quantity over quality  as long as the quality is as good as the Trogs.  The other teams look like this:

The methodology was to take all players with an Runs Above Replacement of 10 or more which would make up the core of each RCBL team.  This worked out to about 220 players.  Every team will have other players but I don’t view them as impact players.  In this case I took the defensive WAR for each of the core players and totaled it up by team.  I did a conversion to a dRAR to make it easier to make the overall rankings.  As you can see the Vols and Guerillas are clearly the class of the league.   Then there is a pack of teams around 5 dWaR then it proceeds downward to the Skunks being up the rear.  Now this is strictly based on these stats and does not account for any manipulation Hal and the SOM crew do when they make up the range and error ratings. Theoretically if SOM does the job correct the results should be:

Name dWAR dRARx
Vols 7.5 525
Guerillas 6.9 495
Rottweilers 5.6 430
Reelists 5.4 420
Crawdads 5.3 415
Dawgz 4.8 390
Grays 4.2 360
SharkBites 3.7 335
Spotted Owls 3.7 335
Howlin’Wolves 3.6 330
OBlasts 3.2 310
MVs 1.4 220
Freebasers 0.8 190
Wobs 0.8 190
CerealKillerz 0.6 180
Trogs 0.2 160
Furies -0.1 145
Shamrogs -0.3 135
Sprockets -0.4 130
Skunks -2.3 35

The Vols have six very good defensive regulars with the only potential liability being Hunter Pence  but he isn’t bad enough to drag the team down.

Name dWAR
Kyle Seager* 2.0
Adam Eaton* 1.8
Jackie Bradley* 1.6
Anthony Rendon 1.1
Matt Wieters# 1.1
Trevor Story 0.9
Tim Beckham 0.5
Joe Mauer* -0.2
Scooter Gennett* -0.2
Steve Pearce -0.3
Hunter Pence -0.8

The Guerillas don’t have as many good defenders as the Vols but have a great on in Crawford and no real liabilities.  Based on the rosters at the time this was worked out the Vols and Guerillas are definitely the 2 best defense teams.

Name dWAR
Brandon Crawford* 2.7
Dustin Pedroia 1.8
Brett Gardner* 0.8
Paulo Orlando 0.8
Martin Prado 0.5
Anthony Rizzo* 0.2
Marwin Gonzalez# 0.1
George Springer 0.0

I found the Century Sprockets to be an interesting case as they have Kiermaier who was one of the best defensive players last year but then they have two boat anchors in  Bautista and Pujols.  However SOM gave them “4″s  not “5″s so maybe the offset won’t be as bad as it appears.

Name dWAR
Kevin Kiermaier* 3.0
Neil Walker# 0.2
Jose Ramirez# 0.1
Charlie Blackmon* 0.0
Yoenis Cespedes -0.6
Jose Bautista -1.4
Albert Pujols -1.7

The Fighting Skunks only have one bad fielder in Encarnacion but everyone else is near average.  It looks like SOM was a little generous with Encarncacion coming in with a 3.  Everyone else is about average so it won’t be a bad defense, just no particular fielding gems.

Name dWAR
Corey Seager* 0.7
Derek Dietrich* 0.0
Lonnie Chisenhall* 0.0
J.T. Realmuto -0.1
Mark Reynolds -0.2
Stephen Piscotty -0.4
Rougned Odor* -0.5
Adam Jones -0.6
Edwin Encarnacion -1.2

The Midnight Venom are also interesting as their two best defenders are both SSs,    Trumbo is pretty poor but I think SOM lets you hide a poor glove at 1st pretty well.   I don’t know how much he is planning to use Danny Boy Valencia but when he is out there he should be a liability.

Name dWAR
Addison Russell 2.7
Troy Tulowitzki 1.8
Travis Shaw* 1.4
Stephen Vogt* 0.5
Leonys Martin* 0.2
Cameron Rupp 0.1
Chris Davis* -0.2
Starlin Castro -0.3
Nori Aoki* -0.7
Danny Valencia -2.0
Mark Trumbo -2.1

Obviously some teams will have better defenders on the bench but I am thinking that these 220 players will be getting the bulk of the playing time.     For the overall rankings I counted fielding as 14% of the total.

In 2014 I drafted Drew Hutchison in the first round and certainly hasn’t lived up to my expectations.  I decided to look at who else was available and who I should have taken.    If anyone is interested here are the results of their  runs above replacement (RAR) over the last 3 years.

“Minor league wages are not dictated by a competitive market at all, but stem from a different system entirely. The current minor league wage isn’t the market equilibrium wage, but is set by a monopolistic employer. It’s not as though individual teams bid up minor leaguers’ wages, even if the current wage is sub-optimal. Rather, a minor leaguer has one employer that can employ them until his becomes a free agent. Until then, the league tells that employer how much players will be paid. And the league happens to set that figure uncompetitively low.”

Most of you know very well what it’s like to trade with the owner of the Crawdads. Some magic occurs—and before you know it, you’ve given away Jose Bautista and gotten only your middle-of-the-pack first-round pick in return. Or, you find that you’ve surrendered a third-rounder for a utility infielder who has trouble staying above AAA. Both of these actually happened recently, and of course the annals of the league are filled with plenty of other examples of how the Crawdads sweet-talk and swindle and bully their way to the top year after year. I swear, it’s as astounding as Donald Trump getting a major party presidential nomination.
And just like Trump, false promises are a part of the shtick. Super salesmen are super good at the bait-and-switch.
One current instance of such: On a rainy Sunday afternoon, by his own account the master trader had nothing better to do to amuse himself than to see how big an offer he could make to get one of the  game’s top players. Eventually the deal became huger and huger till it became a five-for-one so rich that I had to examine it despite my reluctance to part with the young superstar and to deal with the devil.

With a positional problem I was trying to address I needed time to assess my options. Two other potential trade partners were too busy to respond. I asked for more time to consider. I also needed to play many games to be within legal trading distance.
I’ll quote the relevant email verbatim:
Me: “So the offer stays on the table until I play game 28 and then I say yes or no.”
Crawdads: “Sure…”

But then I asked for more info–about the remaining availability of the players in the deal for this season—and when I assessed it, I found the deal had some key flaws. Then I temporarily lost my mind and forgot who I was dealing with, and I laid out my problems with the deal to explain why I felt I had to say no. And he didn’t offer to fix the deal, because by then he’d realized it wasn’t so great for him.
His rainy-day boredom had overcome his normal good judgment.

A little later, I figured out a way to solve that problem and still make the deal work—and my other avenues weren’t panning out. So I asked for reassurance the deal was still on the table, as promised.

But in the meantime a key player in the deal became the hottest current hitter in the major leagues.
And the master trader responded he’d forgotten who was in his offer (!)– and when I told him what it was he said was now “reluctant to trade” the suddenly awesome player and offered me his other option–and, true to form, tried to sell it as a good deal !

So much for his word. He will convince you that I took the deal off the table, which is how he justifies going against his written promise. I haven’t yet played 28 games, though, have I? So doesn’t his word still stand?

I have no hope for any recourse here. Just wanted to document another instance of the same old same old pattern for the amusement of all of you. It does no good to point out that he’s been bamboozling his way to the top for three decades now. He even went 28-0 lifetime against one trusting opponent, but no one will question his behavior except your good old curmudgeonly correspondent and party spoiler.

So let’s toast the master! He’s done it again. A command performance that’s very fitting in the year of Trump.
